Nationwide updates to preschool safety regulations have been implemented, focusing on strengthening child protection and creating safer learning environments. Key changes include stricter rules to expedite the reporting of serious incidents, particularly physical and sexual abuse allegations, which now must be reported to relevant authorities within 24 hours, a significant reduction from the previous seven days. This ensures quicker intervention and heightened accountability, signaling a strong commitment to child safety.
Additional regulations address the safe use of digital technologies within early learning settings. Preschools are now required to establish clear policies on the use of devices such as CCTV, digital cameras, and online platforms, emphasizing privacy, data protection, and obtaining parental consent before capturing or sharing images and videos of children. These measures aim to safeguard children from potential misuse of digital media and reinforce confidentiality practices within childcare environments.
Other safety enhancements include a ban on vaping substances and devices within preschool premises, extending existing prohibitions on tobacco, alcohol, and illicit drugs. Physical safety is also being prioritized through mandated regular safety inspections of facilities and play equipment to prevent accidents and injuries. Facilities are encouraged to implement child-proofing measures, such as securing heavy furniture and monitoring playground conditions, alongside installing locked doors with alarms to prevent unauthorized access or child wandering.
From January 2026, further refinements to national quality standards will sharpen the focus on child safety and protection, embedding these principles more explicitly into governance and leadership requirements. Support materials and guidance documents have been developed to assist preschools in adapting to the updated regulations effectively. These enhancements reflect evolving understanding and societal expectations, ensuring that early childhood education centers maintain the highest safety standards, providing secure and nurturing environments for children’s growth and learning.
